SASSA Card Transition Deadline Extended to 20 March 2025
14 February 2025
The government has announced an extension for South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries to switch from their gold SASSA cards to the black Postbank cards. Originally set for 28 February 2025, the new deadline is 20 March 2025.
This decision follows feedback from social grant recipients expressing concerns over the initial timeframe. Ministers of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, and Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, issued a joint statement reassuring beneficiaries that payments will continue without disruption, even beyond the 20 March deadline.
“Grant payments will proceed as usual after 20 March. However, beneficiaries who haven’t exchanged their cards by then will need to visit a Post Office branch to access their funds,” the ministers said.
The government is ramping up efforts to ensure a smooth transition. More staff and additional card-swapping sites will be made available across the country, including mobile offices to reach rural communities. Daily updates on the card transition will be monitored to address any challenges swiftly.
Although the gold SASSA cards will stop working after 20 March, beneficiaries can still apply for the new Postbank black cards at any time beyond that date. The government is also working with local authorities and community leaders to provide clear communication and assistance to beneficiaries.
