The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has officially opened applications for its Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2026 intake, offering young South Africans an opportunity to serve in the military across various branches. The two-year contracts will see recruits undergo extensive military training and functional deployment, providing a stepping stone to long-term careers in defense services.
General Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- RSA citizenship (no dual citizenship).
- Age range of 18-22 (Grade 12).
- Age range of 18-26 for applicants with a tertiary qualification or N6.
- Minimum Admission Point Score (APS) varies by branch.
- No visible tattoos on legs, lower arms, neck, or face.
- No criminal record or pending cases.
- Compliance with medical fitness requirements.
Opportunities in Each Branch
South African Air Force (SAAF)
Candidates can apply for roles such as Communications Operator, Firefighter, Human Resources Clerk, and Military Legal Practitioner. Those with a commercial pilot license (CPL) are eligible to apply for pilot positions.
South African Military Health Service (SAMHS)
Opportunities include patient administration, logistics, and specialized roles like pest control operators and emergency care assistants. The branch also offers study programs such as MBChB and nursing diplomas.
South African Navy (SAN)
Applicants can pursue combat, engineering, diver, or support roles. Combat applicants must meet specific requirements, including Mathematics and Physical Science at Level 4 or higher.
South African Army
Available careers include Infantry, Artillery, Intelligence, Human Resources, and Technical Services. Minimum height and weight requirements apply, along with BMI standards for applicants.
