STEM – Virtual Research Traineeship 2026

STEM for Development, in collaboration with The RNA Institute at the University at Albany, is pleased to announce the Virtual Research Traineeship 2026, a transformative global research and training initiative.

Supported by the Talent Mobility Fund, this prestigious, fully virtual program offers a year-long, mentored research experience for exceptional students and early-career professionals from Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) as classified by the OECD.

The Virtual Research Traineeship aims to equip the next generation of global scientists with the technical, analytical, and professional skills needed to thrive in competitive international research environments, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of bioinformatics.

Who Should Apply?
We welcome applications from students and recent graduates who are passionate about scientific discovery, committed to professional development, and eager to contribute to solving global challenges through research.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Be a national of a Low- or Middle-Income Country (LMIC), according to the OECD classification.
Be a current undergraduate or Master’s

student, or a recent graduate (within the past 24 months) in a STEM-related discipline (e.g., biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, data science, etc.).
Be proficient in English (written and spoken).
Have reliable internet access and a personal computer capable of running required software

Possess prior experience or strong interest in R programming, command-line tools, or bioinformatics.
Applicants from underrepresented regions or institutions with limited access to research infrastructure are especially encouraged to apply.

Technical Skill Development
Trainees will receive specialized training in:
R programming for biological data analysis
Command-line tools and high-throughput data pipelines
Scientific computing and statistical methods
Data visualization and interpretation

Scientific Communication:
Participants will enhance their ability to:
Write scientific reports and articles
Prepare abstracts and manuscripts
Present findings in professional formats
Engage in peer review and collaborative critique
