Context

Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) continue to be widespread challenges, affecting over one-third of women globally.

Women and girls face various forms of violence — emotional, economic, physical, and sexual — in all aspects of life, including online environments. UN Women is working alongside South Africa’s government to address GBVF, particularly in alignment with its commitments under the G20’s

Empowerment of Women Working Group (EWWG) and broader international frameworks such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Beijing Platform for Action.


Role Summary

The consultant will support UN Women’s work on GBVF through research, policy analysis, technical guidance, and content development. Reporting to the UN Women Specialist on Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW), the consultant will collaborate closely with South Africa’s Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD).


Key Responsibilities

Conduct analysis of legal and regulatory frameworks related to GBVF across G20 countries.

Develop policy recommendations based on best practices and emerging insights.

Provide technical support to South African government engagements on GBVF prevention and response.

Assist in identifying community-based, sustainable GBVF solutions.

Support the creation of knowledge products such as policy briefs, concept notes, and reports.

Contribute to coordination efforts and capacity development for the G20 EWWG on GBVF.

Provide technical expertise in legal reform, justice system dynamics, and prevention strategies.

Develop and refine technical content and reporting for G20 activities.

Help organize and support events, including a side event on positive masculinities.

Ensure confidentiality in all project-related information and activities.


Deliverables

Monthly and thematic reports for DWYPD and UN Women.

Technical guidance, briefing documents, and discussion papers.

Position papers and policy briefs on GBVF.

Support planning and coordination of events related to the G20 GBVF agenda.

Contribute to monitoring and evaluation aligned with key performance indicators.

Qualifications

Education:

Master’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or related field.

Bachelor’s degree with additional experience may be considered.

Experience:

At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in GBVF, legal reform, gender-responsive budgeting, advocacy, or public policy.

Proven experience in developing EVAW-related content (at least 2 published outputs).

Familiarity with global GBVF frameworks (e.g., CEDAW, UNSC Resolutions).

Experience in designing and delivering training or tools related to GBVF.

Strong writing and research capabilities.

Language:

Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or other UN languages is an asset.


Additional Information

The consultant will work on-site and may need to travel for meetings and events related to the W20 and DWYPD.

Travel must comply with UN Women’s guidelines.
