Role Overview
The Health, Safety and Risk Officer is responsible for implementing, managing, and maintaining effective health, safety, and risk management systems at the mill. The role ensures full compliance with legislative requirements and company standards while promoting a safe working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Implement and enforce corporate and site-specific health, safety, and risk policies, procedures, and work instructions.
Ensure compliance with all applicable legal requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and communicate legislative updates to management and staff.
Coordinate and chair monthly health and safety meetings, maintaining accurate records and distributing minutes to relevant stakeholders.
Communicate health, safety, and risk responsibilities clearly to all branch employees.
Assist branch management with the appointment of First Aiders, Fire Fighters, and Health and Safety Representatives.
Coordinate health, safety, and risk training in collaboration with HR and the Head Office Training Department.
Ensure all employees receive appropriate safety training aligned to their job requirements upon commencement of employment.
Maintain a safe environment for personnel, products, and operational processes.
Conduct monthly inspections to ensure the plant remains free from mycotoxins and salmonella.
Oversee contractor safety compliance, including inductions and adherence to site requirements.
Conduct safety inductions for all new employees prior to starting work.
Manage workplace injury reporting and ensure affected employees receive appropriate medical care.
Monitor and enforce the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Audit housekeeping standards across production areas, workshops, and external factory premises in line with company and environmental guidelines.
Collaborate with Production and Maintenance teams to identify and improve plant safety, efficiency, and risk controls.
Perform regular housekeeping audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Maintain and update quality, safety, environmental, production, and logistics management systems.
Update and manage quality data systems.
Monitor observations and non-conformance reports (NCRs) weekly and implement corrective and preventative actions where required.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications:
Matric (Grade 12)
Relevant Health and Safety qualification
Legal Requirements:
Valid Code 08 / EB driver’s licence
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role
Experience within the feed milling or manufacturing environment
Strong knowledge of health, safety, and risk management systems
Knowledge & Skills:
Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word, and Outlook
Strong organisational, communication, and reporting skills
